Forget about doing long bouts of cardiovascular training. It is a waste of time. The idea about doing long bouts of cardio is that you stay in the fat burning zone. But guess what happens when you are done? You go back to your normal metabolic rate. Do intervals. Even though you are well above the fat burning zone, in the long run you will be in fat burning zone longer. After the interval session is over your body will have to recover and repair the working muscles. This will keep you in the fat burning zone for up to 12 hours after completing the workout.
Do full body compound exercises. These are exercise that involves movements across two joints. Some of these may include dead lifts, bench press, military press, squats and lunges. These are demanding exercises and your body will have to use lots of energy to replenish and repair these muscles after working out. These exercises also create a muscle building hormone. The more lean muscle you have the higher your metabolism.
Make sure that you are on a proper diet and avoid cutting too many calories. You will be working hard and your body needs to refuel. What you are looking for is a diet in which you consume 500 calories less than what it would take to maintain your weight taking in account what you expend with your workouts per day. You are also looking to vary the amount of calories that you eat each day. If you continuously eat fewer calories your body will try to adjust and actually lower your metabolism. Do not do 100 crunches a day. If you want to increase the size of your biceps you would not do 100 curls with a 5 pound weight. So why do so many people do this with their abs. Add weight so the maximum amount of repetitions you can complete is 12 to 15. This is the most effective repetition range to build was board abs.
