Stopping Common Indoor Bugs

Some of the commonest bugs we encounter indoors anywhere in the world are flies, spiders, fleas and beetles. Nobody likes to have insects indoors, so most people will go to just about any lengths to get rid of these common indoor bugs. The less common indoor bugs may be woodlice, earwigs, scorpions and millipedes or centipedes, although they are not less wanted.
No matter where you live in the world, it is very hard to keep these common indoor bugs outside, unless you go to the extremes of keeping all your windows and doors shut all of the time, which is obviously impossible. I now stay in Thailand and I know for certain that this is not possible.
So, just what can you do about it? Well, let’s deal with all the flying bugs first, as of all the common indoor bugs, I think they are the most obnoxious indoor bug. They are very annoying, buzzing around your head and mosquitoes and other flies can produce irritating sores and besides that, all flies carry disease. I hate to see them walking on food, knowing that they have more than likely just come off some dung heap somewhere and now they are spitting on my food in order to taste it with their stinking feet!
My first line of defence is fine-mesh door and widow screens. They are not dear and can be added retrospectively to any window. My window meshes slide, so they will protect only one half of the window at a any one time, but I do not think that’s a problem. You can still create cross-winds, by opening two or more windows at opposing sides of a room. I love to see the flies on the mesh trying to get in by day and the mosquitoes doing the same by night. At night, it is wise to switch on as little light indoors as possible so as not to attract these common indoor bugs.
My second line of defence is natural predators – lizards, like Geckos (Jin Jok, in Thai). Some people don’t like them in the house either. I can’t say I’m all that keen on them indoors myself, but they are hard to keep out and they do eat hundreds, if not thousands, of indoor bugs every day. I like to see them lying in wait on the outside of the mesh, ready to pounce on any bug trying to wriggle its way through the mesh.
My third line of defence is an indoor bug zapper. You know, the electric, handheld bug zapper that looks like a toy tennis racquet. They are fantastic at trapping and destroying any flying indoor bug. The inset literally explodes and vaporizes on contact with the fully-charged wires of the indoor bug zapper. If you haven’t tried using one, you really ought to. They are most gratifying. These three defences keep our house pretty much free of flies.
The creeping common indoor bugs are less of a problem really. Door screens on springs will keep 95% of them out and the Geckos will help too. Spiders can get in fairly easily, but then, I don’t mind them too much as long as they keep out of my way, as they consume other insects too. They are on our side to be honest. However, for those who can not bear to trap them and put them outside, the handheld indoor bug zapper works a treat on spiders too.
Sometimes, Fleas can be a problem, if you have cats or dogs, but then if you wash or dust the animal once a month, you should be able to keep these common indoor bugs under control quite easily. However, there are two final methods that we use. Every week, before we go out for the day, we spray every room with fly killer and every six-months we spray any rugs or carpets with an insect killer containing permethrin, which will survive washing and vacuuming for that long without losing its ability to kill common indoor bugs on contact. If you follow these methods, you will be able to keep your home or office quite free of the most common indoor bugs and any less common indoor bug too.

Safe Gas Furnace Repairs

There is not actually a lot to go wrong with contemporary gas furnaces, but each mechanical device can fail and the central heating system is one of them. The problem is though, that hundreds of millions of households all over the world have come to rely on their central heating unit.
In general, people are not advised to meddle with items that they know nothing of, especially if it refers to something that could become a fire hazard, but this article is about safe gas furnace repairs, that you can undertake yourself.
Some of these tips might stand you in good stead if the gas furnace in your home central heating system gives up the ghost. These pointers could save you cold nights and high call-out fees.
The more that you get intimate with your central heating system, the more easily you will identify issues that arise, because in general, home heating units have intermittent issues and recurring problems.
Does your heating system keep switching itself on and off at unsuitable times? This probably has something to do with the thermostat. The old way of dealing with thermostats was to tinker with them, but no one does that anymore, they just replace them. You might as well do the same.
Buy a replacement thermostat and fit it, but if you want to learn more, play around with the metal disk in the old one and refit it after a modification. If you keep going like this, you may find out what works one day. Some thermostats are quite easy devices and you can suss them out.
If your central heating system keeps closing down, this is also probably a difficulty with the thermostat, so long as there is fuel in the tank. The strategy is the same. Look at the disk inside the thermostat and read any writing on it. Normally, if you bias it one way or the other, it will correct the problem.
A very simple one is the pilot light. If your set-up is not working, simply check that the pilot light is burning. The pilot light serves as the ignition for a heat cycle, so if there is not one there, there will be no heat cycle or heating.
The pilot light can be blown out or merely go out because of a temporary shortage of fuel, after which it will have to be re-ignited.
If your entire heating system appears to be working normally, but there is no heat coming through the vents, it is almost certainly the blower. Check the fan belt and either tighten the tension or replace it. This is an easy job, which, having done once, you can do in your sleep.
The foremost thing concerning any home appliance is not to automatically reach for the phone book if things go wrong. That is exactly what the want you to do. They would like you to think that items are too difficult unless you have studied them, whereas in fact, most engineers only replace parts – very little is fixed or taken apart any more.

Fire Safety With A Home Fire Safety Code

Most people have learned a fire safety drill at some time during their lives. Kids learn it in school and adults learn it at work, yet how many individuals put it into practice it at home? If it is worth practicing a fire safety code at work, it must be worth practicing one at home too.
You could adapt and adopt the fire safety code from work for your home use, and just like in school, you will have to make sure that everyone in your household knows and knows your fire safety code. Adopting a home fire safety code will greatly raise your family’s chances of surviving a home fire.
The specialists at the fire station are known as Fire Prevention Officers. Fire prevention officers frequently give talks on fire prevention techniques at schools, offices and seminars. It is also often possible to have a one-on-one interview with a fire prevention officer but they will also visit you in your home for more specific advice in some regions.
The chief fire prevention officer has to train new recruits and schedule public buildings for check ups depending on their location, age and usage. You could use the same criteria to assess the risks in your own home.
For instance, older houses tend to have more timber in them and smaller windows which means that it may catch fire more easily, it may burn faster and it might be more problematic to escape from because of the smaller windows, which might even be jammed.
Only to give you an concept of what a building’s fire code can be like, I will give some examples below. You can apply some of these concepts to the ‘fire code’ for your home, according to what sort of building you occupy.
Firstly, buildings in numerous countries have maximum occupancy levels for each residential building, especially for commercially rented buildings. You may not simply keep partitioning accommodation in order to cram in more tenants (and get more rent). This maximum is a strict law and must be adhered to.
If you live in or rent out a commercial property, then all exits ought to be clearly labeled with lit signs which can be seen through smoke. They also have to have a battery back-up in case the cables are burned through. These buildings also have to have a certain number of fire extinguishers and there may even have to be a number of different kinds, eg: water hoses, sand buckets, fire blankets and regular extinguishers.
There also have to be smoke detectors and a building-wide fire alarm system. Make sure that flammable materials are kept in a safe place and that fire drills are carried out on a regular basis. Everyone should know their muster point and which doors should be closed and which ones left open.
Lots of the tips above are actually laws for commercial and some residential premises, so if you do not want to fall foul of the law, make certain you know your obligations.

Finding A Remedy For Snoring For A Good Night’s Sleep

Snoring is thought of as a ‘benign problem’ by most persons who snore. A bit of a joke really. But it is no joke to those who have to listen to it. No joke at all. Snoring can also be a sign that there is a deeper problem. It is related to obstructive sleep apnoea, but is not automatically the same.
It is equivalent to obstructive sleep apnoea too in that the sufferer is rarely aware of the difficulty – that is left to a sleeping partner or everyone else in the house.
Deprivation of sleep might sound like bad luck or something that can be caught up on the next day, but in actual fact it goes far deeper than that. Those who have not had a decent night’s sleep find it hard to concentrate and might even nod off. This is naturally not a sensible idea if you are a driver.
Sleep apnoea causes a loss of quality sleep on a frequent basis and so it is no shock that sufferers of obstructive sleep apnoea run three times more danger of a driving accident or a serious accident at work than others. That is bad enough, but the sleeping partner of a sufferer of obstructive sleep apnoea runs the same increased risk.
Apnoea also puts more strain on the heart and is a major issue in high blood pressure. It also starves the brain of oxygen with whatever effects that might have.
There are a number of methods of treating snoring (apnoea is normally treated with an oxygen mask known as CPAP).
There are nose strips which stop the walls of the nose collapsing and reverberating, if that is your problem. There are special pillows that raise the head reducing the weight of a heavy neck on the windpipe. There are dental appliances to stop the tongue and other parts slipping back into the airway causing an obstruction. There is acupuncture and there is hypnotism.
However, it is worth noting, that most of the loudest snorers are overweight. For these individuals, the first approach has to be to lose weight, because that will also benefit them in many other ways as well.
Individuals find that changing their sleeping position assists with their snoring. The worst position for snoring is lying on your back. Lying on your side is a good way of decreasing snoring as can lying on your front.
The thing to keep in mind is the weight of your skin and flesh weighing down on your airways, especially on your throat. There is also the problem of your tongue and palate falling into the back of your throat and either vibrating or blocking the passage – lying on your side or front prevents this happening.

How To Choose A Discount Hearing Aid
June 6, 2011 by Owen Jones

When you go to consult your ‘ENT’ (Ear, Nose and Throat) doctor, your otolaryngologist or your audiologist, it is better to have some personal knowledge of hearing aids and the type of hearing aid you would like and can afford. If you do not have this knowledge, you may come away from the doctor’s surgery feeling that you have been rail-roaded into making a snap decision and purchasing something that you would rather not have.
It is far better to go in with some information on hearing aids, then to listen to what the doctor has to tell you and then to do some more study on that supplementary information.
Many doctors’ surgeries will offer you a selection of excellent hearing aids, but they are rarely bargain basement priced. You usually have to pay the full recommended retail price, which does not make sense, because everything is discounted somewhere nowadays.
The problem that you will face, if you attempt to get a cut-rate model is how to avoid forgeries and seconds. Therefore, it is imperative to check the item that you are buying against the specifications of an authentic device.
If you do this right, you could save between 25% and 50% on the MRRP (manufacturer’s recommended retail price). In order to make sure that you have the legitimate article, take away literature on the doctor’s recommended hearing aids from the doctor’s office.
Get as much data on two or three hearing aids as you can along with the doctor’s prices. Now you can go for a walk through town and surf the Internet looking for the exact same devices at cut-rate prices.
Be suspicious of look-a-likes and forgeries. I once saw dozens of people buying hugely low-priced Nokia 97 mobile phones. Not many people noticed that it said: Nokla 97 on the phones’ casing and of course, most of the functions of the original did not work. Checking the country of origin can be a sure sign, although most things appear to be made in China these days.
If the doctor’s recommendation was for a digital unit, be sure not to be fooled by phrases such as ‘programmable analogue’ or even ‘programmable digital’, because they are not completely digital, even though they are better than straight analogue hearing aids.
A truly digital device will have channels so that your audiologist can fine tune the device to your particular hearing problems. Make sure that the unit you are looking at has the same quantity of channels as your doctor’s.
Check that the two devices are worn in precisely the same way, because a lot of manufacturers will make quite a number of models of hearing aid, so an HA991 could easily be confused with an inferior HA990, for example.
Check the data for both models carefully especially with regard to the aid’s sensitivity, directional microphones and sound reproduction capabilities.
Do both items have the same amount of presets? And do they both have a memory for your preferred settings? These presets are not necessarily essential, but once you have used them, you will soon find them extremely convenient. This is a lot of information to bear in mind, but it is the only safe method if you want to learn how to choose a discount hearing aid shrewdly.
