Which videogame has been around for over twenty years and is more popular than ever? That would be Madden NFL. Starting out on the Apple II system it is now available (in many releases) on almost all popular video game console made in the past twenty years. EA Sports has consistently added exciting new features in every version to keep its fan base wide and growing.

John Madden is the namesake personality to give his name to the game. He inspired a lot of of the original innovations to the videogame for more authenticity. He did not want his name tied with something that was not authentic. But Madden\’s real appeal was his charisma that could be introduced to the game. Madden is acknowledged as a fan of retro tough guy kind of football. This comes through in his on-air commentary style, was demonstrated in his time as a NFL coach, and reflected in his yearly tough-man group- the All-Madden Team.

John Madden is the voice doing the analysis for the videogame. This gives the videogame an authentic feel of a true pro football game. For a number of releases he was accompanied by his real-life, on-air broadcast collaborators. In the 1990s when Madden was with CBS Pat Summerall joined to give his voice to the game. After 2000 when John Madden was a analyst for Monday Night Football Al Michaels joined him as a voice on the videogame.

The game\’s history goes back to 1989. It was then that the EA Sports wanted John Madden\’s celebrity for a football videogame. Though there may be more recognizable celebrities, his well-known fondness for hard-hitting football brought an attitude to the game. The videogame company has been so good at capitalizing on the attitude that some people know the game but not John Madden. Even with his retirement the game\’s sales continue to grow and people anticipate each new edition .

Madden NFL is pervasive. It is constantly in the media with high profile athletes talking about playing it or using it as some kind of reference. It has been shown or mentioned in television and film. During the weeks hyping the Super Bowl the videogame is used as an indicator of who will win. It even has its own mystery. NFL football players who appear on the cover have over the years had a poor season after being on the cover. John Madden stopped being on the cover in 1999.

Truly, this game has come a long way since being introduced on Apple II computer. It is highly customizable. One can play other players via the Web, they can play an entire season, and it even has its own Madden Bowl. So, despite the retirement of John Madden from the broadcast booth the video game will surely continue on for many years.
