The Beck anxiety inventory scoring system comprises of a scale that allows one to evaluate his anxiety levels. This score system rates the answers that the inventory respondents describe according to their symptoms and rate of their anxiety attacks occurrence.

A score between zero and three is assigned to each answer. At the end of the inventory, the respondent is able to evaluate his anxiety level. The ratings are as follows:

* A rating of zero indicates that the respondent does not experience this symptom.

* A score of one indicates the presence of the symptom, although the individual would describe it as mild and doesn\’t affect him at all.

* A score of 2 means \”I do have this symptom, and it affects me fairly often.\” This score indicates a moderate effect of the anxiety symptom in the respondent.

* A score of three indicates that the symptom is affecting the individual greatly and frequently. This means he experiences a severe level of the anxiety symptom.

Some of the symptoms rated by the inventory include fear of dying, difficulty in breathing, feeling nervous, dizziness, wobbliness in the legs and numbness, among other symptoms. They are aimed at distinguishing anxiety from depression symptoms.

The respondent must give each symptom a rating once he has read it. The score is tallied by summing up all the corresponding values. The final score determines one\’s anxiety level. The score can be interpreted in such manner:

* A final score of zero and 21 reflects a low level of anxiety.

* A final score in the range of 22 and 35 reflects a moderate level of anxiety, and

* A final score that is 36 points and above reflects a high anxiety level, and the respondent should consult a doctor as soon as possible.

The scores vary from one person to another, and the daily situations that they face often determine how high or low the scores are. For the inventory to be effective, the respondent should reflect on his experience with the symptoms in the past one week. This will allow him to examine the frequency and consistency of the symptoms.

A low anxiety level is cause for celebration as it indicates that the respondent is very happy with his life, although anxiety exists for a reason. It is healthy to live a life with mild form of anxieties. Conversely, too much anxiety can cause one to live in fear and can be debilitating on his physical condition. Those who have moderate levels of anxiety are usually able to suppress their anxieties, although they should be careful not let it get out of proportion.

The Beck Anxiety inventory scoring will allow individuals to examine their mental and emotional wellness and where they stand. It is often the starting point for respondents with moderate and severe anxiety levels to start seeking professional help. With help, they too can learn to control their anxieties and lead a life freed of stress.

Imagine you are enjoying some well deserved bonding time with your family, and suddenly you feel as if something is smothering you, and you feel as if the four walls are collapsing on you. When caught in such a situation, one cannot help but think: \”what is wrong with me and how can I tell if I\’m having an anxiety attack?\” Anxieties are common and even necessary emotions that help us get away from a dangerous situation. However, it is when anxiety becomes overwhelming that it can become the danger. Victims of anxiety disorders often feel as if something terrible is about to befall them and they are driven to the point of insanity. They cannot help but lost control of themselves.

Sometimes showing one or two symptoms brought on by anxiety can be a natural reaction, but when one begins to panic for no justified reasons there is cause for concern. If you find yourself in such a situation, it is advised that you seek the help of a professional doctor immediately.

Signs And Symptoms

There are a range of signs and symptoms that suggest anxiety attacks and they should never be examined individually. In order to make sense of the condition, one needs to look at all the signs and symptoms to derive at a justified conclusion. The question asked by many sufferers: Can I tell if I\’m having an anxiety attack early enough to curb it?

The answer is \”Yes\”. The truth of the matter is that the earlier you diagnose your condition, the easier it will be to cure it. It is still unknown why anxiety disorders happen, though this much is known: they happen during adolescent years and are hereditary. The following list of factors may suggest the occurrence of an anxiety disorder:

* Sweating profusely

* Inability to control oneself

*Headaches

* Excessive and a heightened sense of worry – this is accompanied by tensed and uneasy feelings that strike without warning

*Increased heart palpitations

* Sleep problems – Inability to maintain normal sleep patterns causing fatigue

* Depression

* Shortness of breath

*Grim feelings that you are in a life-threatening situation, often harbouring thoughts of a heart attack

* Feelings that you are going crazy

Anxiety symptoms are often swift and they can spread quickly. Severe in nature, they can sometimes cripple a human being with an overwhelming sense of fear. This causes the sufferer to shake uncontrollably and become disorientated. Nausea, numbness and chest pains are some other common symptoms.

People previously diagnosed with social disorders are more attuned to the symptoms that plague them but even then, some of the more severely afflicted are still helpless to curb the onset of a panic attack. Many sufferers experience temperature extremes, feeling either icy cold or hot flashes that are mixed with spells of dizziness and feeling faint.

Getting Well

Anxiety issues are a precursor to, or the result of phobias that develop in our subconscious. The key to overcoming acute anxiety episodes before they become full blown panic attacks is relaxation and meditation. If left to its own devices, anxiety episodes will eventually drive the afflicted deeper into depression and feelings that they are no longer in control of their life, and if it is allowed to go untreated this is exactly what will happen.

After the question \”How can I tell if I\’m having a panic attack\” is asked, one must also ask the question of \”What are the steps I can take to rebuild my confidence?\” Anxiety disorders have no known cure. However, with the careful administration of treatment, the victim can once again lead a life that is no longer stricken with problems. A healthy diet must be observed at all times, and the victim must manage his stress well.

If you want to evaluate your level of anxiety symptoms, you can take the beck anxiety inventory test. When taking the test, one will have to reflect on his feelings he experienced in the past one week. The test will be able to let one determine the level of their anxiety symptoms.

In the inventory, respondents have four answers to choose from:

* Not at all

*Mildly (\”but it doesn\’t affect me much\”)

* Moderately (\”it is unpleasant at times\”), and

* Severely (\”it bothered me greatly\”).

The respondents must reflect on their answers according to the individual symptoms as detailed in the inventory. These symptoms include: hot or cold sweats, feelings of dread, muscle tension and tingling sensations.

Every answer is accompanied with a rating. At the end of the test, the ratings are tallied and the total score is used to determine the level of anxiety the respondent has. The maximum score is 36. If the score is in the range of 0 to 7, the respondent is known to have very low anxiety levels. Conversely, any score that is higher than 26 indicates a very high level of anxiety.

Symptoms of anxiety in the inventory

The following includes the list of symptoms of anxiety asked in the Beck inventory. Review them individually and choose one of the answers, 1 being \”Not at all\”, 2 \”Mildly\”, 3 \”Moderately\” and 4 \”Severely\”.

1. Feeling hot

2. Muscle numbness or tingling

3. Feeling unable to relax

4. Dizzy or light headed

5. Feeling wobbly in the legs

6. Feeling unsteady

7. Heart racing or pounding

8. Nervousness

9. Choking feeling

10. Trembling hands

11. Unsteadiness

12. Terror or fear

13. Afraid of losing control

14. Indigestion

15. Flushed face

16. Hot or cold sweats

17. Feeling scared

18. Having laborious breathing

19. Feeling the fear of dying

20. Feeling like the worst is happening

21. Feeling faint

Once you have rated your symptoms, add up all the scores.

Interpretation of scores

If your score is low (0-7), it may be a positive thing. However, there are chances that you might be living in denial or unrealistically. A low score may also indicate that you are detached from yourself, others and your surroundings.

A moderate score (8-21) usually indicates that your body is trying to send you some signals. There may be specific situations that may cause the symptoms of anxiety to arise, such as public speaking, making presentations, during examinations in school or even getting intimate with someone else. You should find methods of calming yourself before the strenuous activity in order to perform it well.

Any score above 22 is an indicator of very high anxiety levels, and is a cause for concern. This is by no means a sign of failure or personal weakness. It is something that requires proactive measures of prevention before the anxiety becomes even more severe and affects your body and mind any further. Medication and counselling are good measures to take when anxiety levels are high.

Taking the Beck anxiety inventory test is easy and provides relatively accurate results about stress and anxiety levels. The inventory can be retaken at different periods of time to view one\’s progress with dealing with their anxiety issues.

What is a panic attack? It\’s when something happens that causes an abrupt urge of fear. There are certain factors that can cause these attacks to occur, such as:

* Family History – when your family has a history of panic attacks there is a great possibility that you will have it too.

* Phobias – attacks will occur when you are expose to a phobic object or situation.

* Medication – withdrawal or discontinued intake of medication can result into relapse. A relapse is bringing you back to where your condition started.

* Biological issues – conditions of the body that may trigger attacks, like hypoglycemia.

* Alcohol and Drug withdrawal – attacks happen that can be from a result or even a side effect from stopping drugs or alcohol.

* Lack of assertiveness – feelings and negative thoughts on your mind that trigger attacks.

Panic attacks are treatable, so there isnt a need to cause any more panic or pressure yourself. In fact, these attacks do not need any chemical medication. Natural treatments like cognitive behavioral therapy and self treatments are mostly recommended to keep you healthy and recover from attacks.

Cognitive is the process of talking to the patient and making them express the fear that is buried deep within themselves. Behavioral is the process of changing your attitudes that will motivate you into a positive outlook on life. A combination of both is the treatment known as cognitive behavioral therapy.

What are self treatment techniques? These treatments refer to the conversion of your bad eating habits into a proper balance diet, poor sleeping habits into good and adequate hours of sleep to motivate and stimulate your mind and body and from a sedentary lifestyle into an active physical lifestyle by doing exercises regularly. Also it includes meditation and yoga to maintain the state of your mind being relaxed and calm.

Always remember, knowledge is key when asking yourself \”What is a panic attack?

How do you recognize you are having a panic attack? Recognizing panic attack symptoms can be hard. People have been admitted to the emergency room of a hospital thinking they were having a heart attack when, in fact, they were suffering from panic attack symptoms! To help you avoid anything that dramatic, here are five of the most general symptoms.

1. Heart Palpitations

You might be suffering from panic attack symptoms if you suffer a racing heart or even chest pains that do not extend to your left arm. Nevertheless, it is always judicious to have chest pains checked by a doctor as it may possibly be a symptom of something more precarious.

2. Sweating Excessively

Have you ever given a speech and prior to your big moment at the podium, you begin to sweat? Panic attack sufferers can undergo excessive at any time. Therefore, if you are noticing that you become very damp, very suddenly, and especially if you are suffering other symptoms, chances are you are experiencing panic attack symptoms.

3. Abdominal Discomfort

Have you ever felt so afraid of introducing yourself in front of other people that you had to skip class altogether? Being embarrassed or nervous about speaking in public is normal and almost everybody feels it. So how do you know if what you are feeling is normal or if it is already a symptom of social panic disorder?

Social anxiety is totally different from being shy or nervous speaking in front of a number of people. This usually entails feeling intense fear that you would do everything, like skipping class, just to avoid it. This anxiety disorder is also termed as social phobia.

When a person has social phobia, he or she feels intense fear speaking in public. They are afraid that their voice would shake and their face would turn beet red or they would freeze. Thus, they get so humiliated that they would do anything to avoid experiencing it again. People with social phobia would avoid any occasion to speak in public, may it be in school or at a social gathering.

But what causes this intense fear of facing the public? Well for people with social phobia, they usually have anxiety attacks when in front of a lot of people because they are actually afraid of being scrutinized, judged or embarrassed in public. Sadly, social anxiety disorder is common and there are a number of people who struggles with social phobia. And this can be triggered by different things for different people.

For some people, they would get anxiety attack when they are in a social and performance situation. Some would feel afraid of speaking to strangers, eating at restaurants, or going to parties. Most would feel afraid to speak in front of a large audience as public speaking is actually the most common trigger in having anxiety attacks.

Getting nervous or embarrassed in front of the crowd is normal. You don’t have to worry about this. But if your nervousness or shyness is giving you extreme distress and interferes with your normal routine or you avoid speaking in public or social situations entirely, then you should start worrying as this is not normal. That is already a symptom of social phobia.

Some other symptoms of this panic disorder are intense worry days ahead of an upcoming social situation, extreme fear of being watched by people you don’t know, too self-conscious and anxious in everyday social situations, and a fear that of embarrassing or humiliating one self. And most of all, you avoid social situations so much that you might not even go out much.

People with social phobia can also feel trembling or shaking, rapid breathing, sweating or hot flashes, upset stomach or nausea, dry mouth, muscle tension, blushing, dizziness or faint, clammy hands, or twitching in public. And of course they would also feel tightening of the chest or their heart’s beating too hard.

Social phobia is actually distressing to people who feel it as this limits their social interaction due to anxiety attacks. Social interactions are essential in getting a job and even in school. So people with phobia actually work harder in school to graduate as they would try to avoid speeches, social interactions, and some even avoid class introduction. So if you are exhibiting symptoms of social anxiety disorder, you should definitely consult your doctor.
